LESSER-KNOWN MANNERIST PAINTERS: PIETER AERTSEN (1508-75) The Dutch Mannerist Aertsen was the son of a wool-comber, and was known as 'Lange Pier' ('Big Peter') on account of his height.
According to van Mander he was trained by Allaert Claesz and perhaps visited Italy before 1535, when he became a member of the painters' guild at Antwerp, where he resided with Jan Mandijn.
